IMAGINARY CINEMA

Cinema without the viewer does not exist. It takes at least one person to make a collection of moving images, called a “film”, come to life on the screen for the duration of the screening. And what if we took away the visual layer from the film? See with us how sound can generate entire worlds in our heads. All you have to do is listen carefully, close your eyes. The rest will be done by your imagination.

As part of the program accompanying the exhibition “All These Paradises, Comets and Polonias”, Wrocław masters of improvised music will perform — Mateusz Rybicki (clarinet, saxophone) and Zbigniew Kozera (double bass).

Mateusz Rybicki is a clarinetist and saxophonist, improviser and composer associated with the improvised music scene and exploratory jazz. He had the opportunity to work with the leaders of the Polish creative music community, as well as many important figures from abroad, including: with Ascetic, Kuhn Fu, Przeczucia, Sundogs, Ircha, Piotr Damasiewicz Power of the Horns, Joelle Leandre Quartet, Małe Instrumenty. He has 10 albums to his credit, of which the album Beauty/Resistance recorded together with Joelle Leandre and Zlatko Kaucic and the album with music to poetry by Andrzej Sosnowski recorded together with Patryk Zakrocki and Zbigniew Kozera deserve special attention, as well as the album of the band Ascetic, which he leads, released in 2023. He has given concerts in Mexico, Germany, Poland, France, Austria, the Netherlands, Belgium, Ukraine, Croatia, Switzerland, the Czech Republic and Slovakia. Mateusz Rybicki’s playing style is characteristic and unique, it clearly refers to the tradition of jazz, it also draws from the spirit of ethnic and classical music, it is essential, organic and characterized by great creativity.

Zbigniew Kozera is a double bassist from Wrocław who also plays the Moroccan Guimbri. Rooted in spiritual jazz, free jazz and free improvisation, recently he has increasingly reached for the tradition of world music (Africa, especially Morocco, Gabon). Known among others for Into the Roots, Sundogs, Rybicki Kozera, Widma, Dominik Strycharski Core. He releases albums on Polish and foreign labels (Not Two, Cleen Feed, Phonogram Unit). Invited to cooperate by Joelle Leandre, Nicole Mitchell, Zlatko Kaucic, Tomek Reid.
