The discussion will be accompanied by a presentation of the fanzine “ATLAS. Humanities Laboratory” by Maciej Bączyk.
The event will take place in the space of the exhibition “ALL THESE PARADISES, COMETS AND POLONIAS”.
“In this book, we seek a genealogy of contemporary humanities laboratories. We are particularly interested in what testifies to their specificity and distinguishes them from their naturalistic relatives. Can we think of humanities and naturalistic laboratories in terms of kinship? Or perhaps the relations between them should be seen beyond the opposition between the humanities and the natural and exact sciences? If, with the development of modern science, the laboratory has been appropriated by natural science, is it possible to reclaim it for the humanities in a way that respects its autonomy? Can the laboratory be a remedy for its problems in the face of the struggle for its place in the neoliberal academy and the need to strive for public attention? From our point of view, the humanities laboratory should not imitate the naturalistic laboratory, but rather operate on the principle of mimicry, undermining the authority on which it is based. This is the only way for the humanities to fulfil their (auto)critical function – to question their own rules, to affirm uncertainty and the right to wander, devalued in the capitalist, success-oriented order of knowledge.”
