Jeju Biennale
The 4th Jeju Biennial 2024 in South Korea began on November 26. Anna Pilawska-Sita and Michał Sita were invited to participate in this year’s edition. They went on a research trip deep into the South Korean island following the traces of bunkers left by the Imperial Japanese army when controlling Jeju in the years 1910-1945. We had the great pleasure of supporting this project and participating in the Biennial exhibition at the Jeju Museum of Art.
Jeju Island is a place steeped in drifting history. explores how the various elements that have shaped Jeju’s nature, religion, culture, and politics intertwine in an international context, teetering on the edge of chance and necessity, creating unique identities and commonalities. Just as the many drifts along ocean currents have shaped our civilization, the Jeju Biennial aims to create another vast ocean where encounters, collisions and mergers take place. Through a variety of artworks and programs, the artists participating in the Biennale explore these themes, offering visitors a new perspective on Jeju’s history and culture, reinterpreting the island’s multi-faceted stories created at the intersection of chance and necessity from an artistic point of view, providing new insights and inspiration.
